Letter: Boycott stores on Thanksgiving holiday
To the Editor:
With all the shopping opportunities available to the people of DeKalb, must we really shop on Thanksgiving Day?
Why should we support merchants who force their employees to work on a holiday? I know some companies ask their employees to ‘volunteer’ to work on Thanksgiving, but what happens to the employee who routinely refuses to volunteer because he or she would rather be celebrating the holiday?
The only way we can encourage businesses to remain closed on Thanksgiving Day is to make it unprofitable for them to open. To that end, I suggest we remain home and boycott retail establishments open on Thanksgiving Day.
If it becomes unprofitable, they will remain closed and their employees can celebrate the holiday with everyone else. Surely arriving at the store at 12:01 a.m. on Black Friday should give the avid shopper enough time for his or her activities. The extra six or eight hours available on the Thursday will be a poor investment if a store is open and empty of shoppers.
