‘Attack of the drones’ the subject of STEM Cafe

When most people hear the word drone, they think of covert military airstrikes, but proponents of autonomous systems see them becoming a part of everyday life. Experts have proposed their use in everything from aerial art to pizza delivery.

At 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Northern Illinois University STEM Outreach invites community members to learn more about drone technology at “Attack of the Drones?” This free event will take place at O’Leary’s Restaurant and Pub, 260 E. Lincoln Highway in DeKalb. Food and drinks will be available for purchase from O’Leary’s.

David Gunkel, a professor of communications at NIU and author of “The Machine Question,” will discuss the social costs and benefits of unmanned systems.

Abul Azad, a professor of technology at NIU, will discuss the development history of drones, their various designs, the technologies involved in creating them, and their capabilities, possible uses and benefits.

This event is one of NIU’s monthly STEM Cafes, in which community members hear a brief, informal talk on cutting-edge research in science, technology, engineering and math and then get their questions answered by STEM experts.
