Violinist Sophie Kennedy of Somonauk portrays the Fiddler in PR Productions' "Fiddler on the Roof." The show open Friday at the Sandwich Opera House.

“Fiddler on the Roof,” the Broadway smash and Tony Award-winning musical that has captured the hearts of people all over the world, will be on stage for six performances at the Sandwich Opera House, 140 E. Railroad St. in Sandwich.

The production will be presented at 7 p.m. Nov. 15, 16, 22 and 23 and 2 p.m. Nov. 17 and 23. Tickets cost $15 for adults and $12 for seniors and students. They are available for purchase online at www.wewantpr.com or by phone at 888-395-0797. Tickets will be available at the door based on availability.

The show, which has been a perennial hit since it first opened in 1964, has enjoyed critical acclaim for bringing to the stage a poignant story about the enduring bonds of family.

The Fiddler, an integral part of the story line, will be portrayed by 12-year-old Sophie Kennedy. Kennedy began playing violin at age 3 with Stan Smith of Aurora Suzuki Violins as her teacher. She now studies with Ann Montzka-Smelser at the Nothern Illinois University Suzuki program.

“I love playing the violin,” she said in a news release. “It’s become a part of my every day life.”

Kennedy also is a member of the Community School of the Arts Symphonette String Orchestra conducted by Linc Smelser, and lives in Somonauk.

“When Sophie attended our open casting call and entered the room with violin in hand, I knew we were in for a treat,” Susan Webb, music director for the production, sai in the release. “She takes such care in the way she creates music on her instrument and is meticulous in how it is presented.”

Audiences will see Kennedy’s portrayal of the Fiddler, not only at the on-set of the production, but throughout the show at various times, and in a pre-show recital on stage.
