Dance marathon raises money for children’s hospital

Northern Illinois University will hold its first-ever Dance Marathon from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Nov. 23 at the Campus Recreation Center.

Dance Marathon is a philanthropic event benefiting Children’s Miracle Network. All of the proceeds raised at the NIU event will support Children’s Miracle Network hospital Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. According to marathon organizers, more than 2,000 children from the region including DeKalb received care at that hospital over the past year.

Dance Marathon participants dance for eight hours straight. Dancers must remain on their feet for the full eight hours. Families receiving care at Lurie Children’s Hospital also will participate. Live dance groups and DJs will perform throughout the event, and there will be other activities, including Lurie families sharing their stories.

The NIU event is sponsored by the Panhellenic Council, with the support of other student organizations. The event is entirely student-run. The fundraising goal for this inaugural event is $20,000.

Participants can sign up online to dance as a group or an individual. Each dancer raises money through a personalized web page. There is a $20 registration fee per person, which includes a T-shirt and food throughout the event.
