Committee meets to discuss Hopkins Pool’s future
DeKALB – DeKalb Park District officials are looking for more people interested in serving on a committee considering the future of the Hopkins Park Pool.
Per Faivre, park board vice president, will lead the committee. Other committee members include board member Keith Nyquist, pool manager Scott deOliveira, interim director Lisa Small and program director Colleen Belmont.
“We have a few members from the community, but we’re looking for a couple more members,” Faivre said. “We are looking to see who responds and looking at attendance records.
“We want to see who has purchased [pool] passes. We will reach out to them as frequent users so they can have input.”
DeOliveira, who is also the park district’s marketing coordinator, said the committee will meet at 6:30 p.m. the first and third Monday of the month for at least the next six months at the administration building, 1403 Sycamore Road in DeKalb.
“The idea is to gather input from different people in the community to determine where we want to take things,” deOliveira said.
Faivre and Nyquist will report to the board on the committee’s discussions, and the information gathered by the committee will be presented to the future executive director.
Residents unable to attend meetings are encouraged to email comments to firstname.lastname@example.org. DeOliveira said he plans to put the link on the park district’s website at dekalbparkdistrict.com.
The district has until 2015 to submit a plan to the state to make the 39-year-old pool, especially its locker rooms and entrances, comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
An earlier plan to replace the pool within its current footprint for $5 million was abandoned this year after three new members were elected to the five-member board.
Also considered was a plan to partner with the Sycamore Park District for a jointly owned new pool. That plan was scrapped when DeKalb park leaders decided they
did not want to spend money to acquire land for a joint facility.
The DeKalb Park District’s ad hoc committee to discuss the future of the Hopkins Park Pool will meet next at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the administration building, 1403 Sycamore Road, DeKalb.
