Minnesota’s Kill still in the spotlight

Shaw Media sports copy editor Kevin Murphy picks his top sporting events to watch on TV this weekend with a spotlight on local graduates:

College football: Northern Illinois at UMass, 11 a.m. today, WPWR-50

The undefeated Huskies (8-0) get another easy opponent this week in UMass (1-7), after blowing out Eastern Michigan, 59-20.

College football: Wisconsin at Iowa, 11 a.m. today, ABC

Former DeKalb football player and Iowa freshman running back LeShun Daniels Jr. finished with eight yards rushing in Iowa’s overtime win against Northwestern.

College football: Michigan at Michigan State, 2:30 p.m. today, ABC

Marmion’s Ryan Glasgow and Graham Glasgow, DeKalb natives, look to help the Wolverines pick up another win.

Graham is set to make his fourth straight start on the offensive line. This time, at center.

College football: Minnesota at Indiana, 2:30 p.m. today, BTN

Will Jerry Kill make the trip? Yes.

Kill, a former NIU and current Minnesota coach, watched the Minnesota-Nebraska gamer from above in the box with his assistants, still on leave from his regular responsibilities while he’s managing his epilepsy.

This was the third straight game he wasn’t in charge, with defensive coordinator Tracy Claeys taking over on the sideline, but he gave the players a pep talk before and after the game and at halftime.

Kill made the trip to Evanston the last time the Golden Gophers were on the road.

Women’s volleyball: Penn State at Michigan State, 7:30 p.m. today, BTN

Geneva graduate and Michigan State senior outsider hitter Lauren Wicinski has been a force the Spartans. Wicinski, who spent her first two years at NIU, has helped the Spartans to a 17-5 start to the season before Friday’s match.

NFL: Vikings at Cowboys, noon Sunday, FOX

Doug Free, a former NIU football player and Dallas offensive lineman, looks to help the Cowboys maintain a lead in the NFC East.

Pro basketball: Bulls at Philadelphia, 6:30 p.m. today, WGN

For the first time this season, the Bulls will play a team that didn’t qualify for last year’s playoffs.

NHL: Calgary at Blackhawks, 7:30 p.m. Sunday, CSN

This is the Hawks’ third back-to-back game on consecutive nights.

College football: Miami (Fla.) at Florida State, 7 p.m. today, ABC

No. 3 Florida State opened up as a 21-point favorite earlier in the week against the seventh-ranked Hurricanes. Yikes. And the Hurricanes barely edged Wake Forest last week. Expect the “tomahawk chop” early and often.
