Published: Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2013 5:30 a.m. CDT

Somonauk Education Foundation will hold its 10th dinner/auction at 6 p.m. Nov. 2 at Timber Creek Inn and Suites. This year’s honorees are Mike and Connie Hamer. The theme for the dinner/auction is “SEF Goes to the Fair” in tribute for the many years the Hamers have volunteered at the Sandwich Fair with the Somonauk Education Boosters project of selling ride tickets.

Mike and Connie met while students at Illinois State University. Connie’s first teaching job was at Waterloo, Ill., and Mike’s was at Serena High School. They decided to get married and thought it would be easier for Connie to find a job teaching special needs children in this area.

Connie taught special education in Somonauk for 33 years. Mike taught in Serena District for 33 years. The first 11 years at the high school teaching chemistry and physics and the next 22 years teaching math and history at Harding. Both are enjoying retirement. Mike retiring in 2004 and Connie in 2006.

The Hamers are involved in church activities at the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Somonauk and Connie is still involved in the preschool screening.

They are the parents of two sons, Josh and Sean.

SEF’s main goals are awarding scholarships to graduating seniors and grants to teachers to support and enrich the educational opportunities in Somonauk schools. SEF directors include Corey Britt, Karlene Dolder, Dr. Dawn Green, Jerry Huber, Dave Mantzke, Lisa Nelson, Joanna Olson. Charlotte Tyrrell and Heather Wilkinson.

For tickets to the dinner and auction, contact a SEF director or Denise Cox at the Somonauk District Office at 815-498-2314.
