MURF'S 'MOTE: NIU football is back on the airwaves

Shaw Media sports copy editor Kevin Murphy picks his top sporting events to watch on TV this weekend with a spotlight on local graduates:

College football: Nebraska at Minnesota, 11 a.m. Saturday, ESPN

Former Northern Illinois football coach Jerry Kill, who is on medical leave to deal with his epilepsy, is expected to attend the home game.

Last weekend, Kill’s wife, Rebecca, drove her husband to the game in Evanston and he surprised the Golden Gophers with a stirring halftime speech.

College football: Eastern Michigan at NIU, 2:30 p.m. Saturdday, CSN

The Huskies haven’t blown out opponents at home. That should be different today.

College football: N.C. State at Florida State, 2:30 p.m. Saturday, ESPN2

Former NIU football coach and current N.C. State coach Dave Doeren has a tough task in preparing for the Seminoles on the road.

Prep football: IHSA Football Playoff Pairing Show, 8 p.m. Saturday, CSN

Local high school football teams will gather to watch their names drawn for the playoff pairings.

NFL: Dallas at Detroit, noon Sunday, FOX

Doug Free, a former NIU football player and Dallas offensive lineman, looks to help the Cowboys maintain a lead in the NFC East.

Men’s soccer: Michigan State at Wisconsin, 2 p.m. Sunday, BTN

Kylie Stannard is an assistant coach with the Michigan State men’s soccer team. Stannard earned his master’s degree in sports management at NIU and was an assistant men’s soccer coach for four seasons.

Pro baseball: World Series, Game 4, Boston at St. Louis, 7 p.m. Sunday, FOX

It was a miserable baseball season for Chicago fans, and I would rather not see St. Louis capture its 12th title. But then again, Boston has won titles just recently in 2004 and 2007.

NHL: Minnesota at Blackhawks, 7 p.m. Saturday, WGN

The Hawks return home from a two-game road trip. The Hawks have a quick turnaround with their Central Division rival, Minnesota, again Monday night.

MLS: Fire at New York, 4 p.m. Sunday, WPWR-50

Well, because the Bears aren’t playing – it’s time to get behind another team – the Fire. They look to clinch a playoff spot, and this futbol team is less aggravating to watch than that football team in the city.
