Sycamore school bus driver ticketed
SYCAMORE – A driver had to take evasive action Friday to avoid a collision with a Sycamore School District 427 school bus with students aboard, police said.
According to a report from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s office, Justin Bartlett, 22, of Crystal Lake, was driving south on Peace Road. He had just gone around the curve on Peace Road when the school bus pulled into the road from Freed Road, police said.
Bartlett swerved to his right, sending his 2007 Subaru Impreza into a ditch along the roadway around 7:15 a.m., police said. Bartlett was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured, according to police.
“He took evasive action to avoid the collision,” Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Gary Dumdie said. “His vehicle was damaged. However, it did avoid a collision with the bus; that’s always a good thing.”
The school bus had just begun its route and had fewer than five students aboard at the time of the incident, Dumdie said.
The bus driver was unaware of the close call and continued on his route. Police later found him with the help of District 427 officials, Dumdie said. The bus driver, Wayne J. Frey, 71, of Sycamore, was cited for failure to yield at a stop intersection.
