Genoa-Kingston's Tommy Lucca finished in a tie for 36th place at the Class 2A boys golf state tournament after shooting an 85 in Saturday's second round.
Lucca bogeyed his first five holes and shot 45 on the opening nine of the Weibring Golf Club at Illinois State University in Normal. Lucca birdied the par-4 10th hole, his only birdie of the day, and finished the back nine in 40.
"He didn't hit the ball as well today at all," G-K coach Mike Lauer said. "He putted well, that wasn't an issue."
Kaneland's Matt Yonkovich shot a 78 on Friday, but followed it up with a 1-over-par 71 on Saturday to finish in a tie for fifth place.
Lucca shot a 76 in the first round on Friday and was tied for 14th entering Saturday's final round, but couldn't put together a similar effort.
"He wanted to get in that top 10," Lauer said. "Overall, he did a spectacular job getting down here and that first day was amazing."
G-K looks to be in good hands in the upcoming years as sophomores Lucca and Nick Adamczyk were the team's top two golfers and both moved into sectional round of the postseason.
"The future looks pretty good for us with those two," Lauer said. "We need to continue to build depth. They've got good experience already."
