Flag raised at SUMC

There now is a United States flag flying at Sycamore United Methodist Church in Sycamore thanks to the Military Ministry of the church.

The group proposed the idea, researched the possibilities of procuring one and they were given a green light to go ahead with the project. The congregation gave their support with donations and the flagpole and flag were purchased. Work began in August at the selected site to anchor the flagpole into the ground.

Dreams were realized on Sept. 15 as “Old Glory” was raised to the tune of everyone singing “God Bless America.”

Annabelle Wilson, widow of John Wilson, a faithful church member and a strong believer of God and country, felt very honored when she was asked to participate in the flag-raising ceremony.

Although most of the ceremony was held indoors due to rain, everyone braved the elements for the actual raising of the flag.

The Military Ministry, who support our military personnel with letters, cards and packages, are dedicating this flag in memory of all who have served in the military and in honor of those who are presently serving our country.
