Genoa-Kingston sophomore boys golfer Tommy Lucca shot a 77 at the Class 2A Freeport Sectional on Monday to qualify for the state meet this weekend.
Lucca finished in a tie for eighth place and became the second G-K golfer to advance to the state meet in the last two years after Emily Wakeley qualified in 2012 in Class 1A.
Kaneland senior Matt Yonkovich also qualified for the 2A state meet by shooting a 78.
Indian Creek 11th: Indian Creek finished 11th as a team at the Class 1A Byron Sectional, shooting a 364.
Peyton Gatz led the Timberwolves with an 86 while Jake Weiseler shot 91. David Boehne shot a 92 and Drew Headley had a 95.
Barbs don’t move on: DeKalb sophomores Connor Hoyle and Ben Melms didn’t qualify for the Class 3A state meet after shooting 86 and 88, respectively, at the Class 3A Naperville Central Sectional.
“It was just a learning experience and you’re hoping it’s your day, but it wasn’t,” DeKalb coach John Cordes said. “As long as they learn from the experience, it will just make them that much hungrier and better next year.”
Russell shoots 86: DeKalb sophomore Maggie Russell shot 86 at the Class 2A Rockford Guilford Sectional, narrowly missing the qualifying cut of 84.
“She went on a run on her second nine. She had five pars out of six holes,” DeKalb coach Chuck Schramm said. “She was hitting a bunch of fairways and really confident in her chipping and making putts. She did a great job and just came up a tad short.”
Kaneland’s Tori Guyton also shot 86.
GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY
Harrod takes 26th: Hinckley-Big Rock freshman Audrey Harrod finished 26th in the girls varsity race at Amboy with a time of 18:54.
