DHS students named merit semifinalists

DeKalb High School students Mary F. Lavoie and Michael Ryzhov have been named National Merit semifinalists by National Merit Scholarship Corp., which conducts the program.

The two seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,000 National Merit Scholarships worth about $35 million.

In addition, DHS students Samantha M. Coakley, Samantha R. LeBlanc and Carmen J. Ward have been named Commended Students.

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized. Although they will not continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top 5 percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the competition by taking the 2012 preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
