KANEVILLE TOWNSHIP – A 32-year-old Cortland woman was killed in a crash shortly before noon Monday near Route 38 and Watson Road outside Maple Park, police said.

Shanay Martin was pronounced dead at Delnor Hospital in Geneva, Kane County Sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Pat Gengler said.

According to an initial investigation, Martin was driving a 2000 Mercury Marquis west on Route 38 east of Watson Road in Kaneville Township. She approached a line of stopped cars waiting for a vehicle to turn south onto Watson Road, Gengler said in a prepared statement.

In an effort to avoid rear-ending the vehicle in front of her, Martin steered into oncoming traffic and collided with a 1987 Chevrolet pickup traveling east on Route 38, according to the statement. The pickup collided with the passenger side of Martin’s car, Gengler said in an email.

The driver of the pickup, Benjamin Frerichs, 35, of Maple Park, was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, according to the statement.

Gengler said in an email at least one of the cars in the line of traffic was waiting to turn onto Watson Road.

The crash remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office. The Kane County Office of Emergency Management and Elburn Police assisted deputies at the scene.
