SOMONAUK – A 10-year-old Plano boy airlifted from a two-car crash outside Somonauk on Monday was listed in critical condition Tuesday at Rockford Memorial Hospital.

The boy was a passenger in a van driven by by Ronda A. Scherer, 44, of the 3700 block of Sandy Bluff Road in Plano. Scherer was driving south on Somonauk Road about 7:15 a.m. Monday when the van collided with a 2001 Volkswagen Beetle at Suydam Road.

Wesley S. James, 22, of the 700 block of North Fifth Street in DeKalb, was driving the Beetle east on Suydam Road and failed to stop at the stop sign, police said. He was thrown from his vehicle and listed in critical condition at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford on Monday afternoon.

Hospital officials did not immediately return a call for James' updated condition report Tuesday morning.

James was charged with disobeying a stop sign, driving without insurance and failure to wear a seat belt.
