Letters to the Editor

Letter: Thanks to Genoa postal customers

To the Editor:

Almost 12 years ago I sat in a conference room with approximately 50 other people.

We were all interviewing for letter carrier positions. Two of the jobs were close to Chicago, the third was in Genoa. While I sat in that room and waited for my name to be called, I heard people ask where Genoa was. There were only two of us who had even heard of the city. We were sitting next to each other. When my name was called, I turned to her and wished her good luck.
I had no idea the next few minutes would change my life. I was a stay-at-home mom who had previously been a secretary.

I don’t know why I was chosen to be a letter carrier, I was just thankful I didn’t have to go back to secretarial work. It wasn’t that I disliked the work, I just wasn’t good at it.

When I started in Genoa I was amazed at how kind the residents were. I thought I would be just dropping mail in your mailboxes. I had no idea that over the next several years I would become attached to all of you.

The friendships I have made have changed me. There have been days when I would go to work and be sad or stressed about something.  Without knowing it, someone would say or do something that would make me smile and laugh. Your kindness would make my day bright and happy.

My job in Genoa is classified as a part-time flexible.  The Postal Service is making several changes. One of those changes it to convert the PTFs to full-time. The full-time position I am moving to is in Sycamore. I should be starting there Saturday.

Sycamore has been my home since my family made the “big move” from DeKalb when I was 7. It will be nice working in my home town, but the sadness comes when I leave all of you.

Genoa has become a second home to me. All of you make me smile.  I didn’t realize how attached I had become to Genoa until it became time to leave. I want to thank you for making the past 11 years so wonderful.
