DeKALB – The two DeKalb teenagers reported missing Monday were found safe today in South Elgin, police said.
Sean Staats, 16, and Mikayla Anne Dick, 15, ran away about 8 p.m. Monday because their parents did not approve of their relationship, Dick's mother, Jennifer, said. The couple dated previously and recently reconciled. Both left home with minimal cash and personal items, police said.
About 2 a.m. Tuesday, Staats sent his father a text message to say they were together and weren't planning to return home because their parents didn't support their relationship. After their case was publicized Wednesday, police received two reports that teens matching their description were seen walking along the Great Western Trail near Wasco or St. Charles, DeKalb police said.
Meanwhile, Jennifer Dick thanked the friends, neighbors and others, for helping spread the word about the missing children. Her contacts with Cub Scouts organized search parties, too.
"I'm eternally grateful to all of them for all that they have done," Jennifer Dick said.
