Board postpones special education class vote

NORMAL – The Illinois State Board of Education is postponing a controversial vote on changing the makeup of special education classes.

The board was scheduled to vote Thursday on eliminating a rule that says special education students can account for no more than 30 percent of a general education classroom. It is also considering eliminating caps on special education class sizes. State Board of Education Spokeswoman Mary Fergus said the board needs more time to discuss the issue.

The proposal is aimed at moving more special education students into mainstream classes.
