Sycamore Park District's celebration a big success

SYCAMORE – The success of the Sycamore Park District’s “Fireworks and Fun” event could inspire park district officials to host another one next year.

Saturday’s event attracted more than 2,500 people to the Sycamore Park Sports Complex, park officials said. Attendees who came got to see Zumba, Mom’s Day Out and step aerobics demonstrations, plus a fireworks show about 25 minutes long.

Ted Strack, Sycamore Park District board president, said he was pleased with the positive response to the celebration.

“At the end of the event, I heard various people say, ‘Go Sycamore!’ ” he said.

The response shows community pride and recognition that park district leaders are headed in the right direction, with the hiring Dan Gibble as the new executive director in February 2012 and focusing on controlling spending, Strack said.

“We’ve been building some momentum, and this is just continuing that momentum,” Strack said.

Although park officials haven’t discussed what the plans will be for next year’s celebration, they are interested in a repeat performance. Strack said he heard one of the things people liked about holding the celebration in September was that it gets darker earlier for the fireworks, making it easier on families and others.

The National Bank & Trust is the sole sponsor for the series of events celebrating the park district’s 90th year and donated up to $9,000 for the fireworks, Strack said.

Without its sponsorship, the celebration would not have been possible, said Bart Desch, district superintendent of recreation.

Desch himself was an important organizer for the event, Strack said.

“We were very happy with the size of the crowd,” Desch said. “I was out there doing traffic and kept hearing people saying ‘good job’ and ‘the fireworks were great.’ ”
