DeKalb council to delay Ford dealer's rebate request

DeKALB – A sales tax rebate proposal for Brad Manning Ford isn't ready to be reviewed by the DeKalb City Council, the dealership's president, Pat Manning said Monday.

The proposal was included on the agenda for Monday's Committe of the Whole Meeting, but city officials have since decided to hold off on considering it.

Instead, the proposal, which requests a $110,000 sales-tax rebate to the dealership to help fund a $2.3 million renovation, will be discussed at a later meeting. Manning said the proposal may be ready for council discussion at its next meeting, which is scheduled for Sept. 23.

According to documents provided by the city, the dealership wants to demolish its existing showroom, customer waiting room and some offices at its building just north of Interstate 88 at 402 Manning Drive. They would be replaced with a larger, modernized showroom that would add about 3,700 square feet to the current building.

The dealership says it can get $400,000 from Ford Motor Co. to put toward the project, but that it still can’t foot the rest of the bill. The requested rebate would come from new sales taxes generated over and above the existing taxes that the dealership generates now, according to city documents.
