Salem Lutheran Church member Robert Orth fashioned 90-pound cement hands for Rally Day Weekend, Sept. 7 and 8, in honor of the ELCA’s 25th anniversary celebration theme: “God’s Work, Our Hands.”

Open hands symbolize God’s gifts freely given to all and our hands in turn open in sharing. Prayer Stones with Salem family names will be held in each hand when the sculpture is set in place later this fall. Each weekend Salem service will include a Blessing of Hands as well as Holy Communion, and all are welcome.

A 9:15 a.m. celebration on Sunday in Fellowship Hall will invite youth and adults to get on board with Salem’s fall programs of Sunday school, confirmation, choirs, puppets, Praise Team and handbells, including a puppet skit, video, craft, singing, snacks and time to register for activities. Everyone is encouraged to bring a gift of hand soap for Salem Food Pantry and cookies to share.

The 8 a.m. Sunday worship will include a blessing of confirmation guides and new sixth-grade confirmation students. The students will receive a backpack of materials for their faith journey over the next three years.

The 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship will be held outdoors on the west lawn (weather permitting) and will include a blessing of Sunday school leaders and students and creative arts leaders and participants. Worshippers are invited to bring lawn chairs or move a chair outdoors from fellowship hall.

Sunday school is offered for children, ages 3 through middle school, from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. Sundays. Children who have reached age 3 by Sept. 1 and are potty-trained are welcome to join the Beginners Class. Older youth may begin at any time during the September through May season of classes.

Confirmation instruction is offered for students in grades 6 through 8 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays and features a schedule of learning, service and fellowship events as well as worship and retreats.

Salem Creative Arts groups that support and enhance worship services include vocal choirs in the following age levels:

Cherubs – age 4 through first grade, Choristers – second through fifth grades, Disciple Song – sixth through 12th grades, and Youth/Adult part-singing in Celebration Voices. All choirs rehearse Wednesdays. Salem Praise Team rehearses one Saturday morning each month with a team of vocalists and instrumentalists.

Salem Puppet Praise Team and Sounds of Grace Handbell Choir are intergenerational groups for youth and adults, grade 5 and up, and meet Thursday evenings.
