Storm rips out power to 8,000 in NW Indiana

HAMMOND, Ind. – A strong storm that shouldered its way through northwest Indiana knocked out power to more than 8,000 customers, but Northern Indiana Public Service Indiana said power has been restored to most of them overnight.

The Times reported the storm Friday night cut power to a police station in Hammond and postponed several high school football games.

NIPSO said about 8,600 customers were without power at one point, most of them in Hammond, less than 20 miles from Chicago.

NIPSCO’s outage website listed 658 customers remained without power about noon Saturday.

The National Weather Service said wind gusts reached 60 mph and downed trees in Lake, Porter and Jasper counties.

The region is expected to get more stormy weather today.
