Mulso: Genoa duck race a quacking good time

Published: Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013 5:30 a.m. CDT

On Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Genoa will be home to hundreds of ducks – plastic ducks that is.

The Genoa Area Chamber of Commerce will host its 10th annual Great Genoa Duck Race and Family Fun Event at Citizens Park. Launch time is 1:30 p.m..

About 2,000 little plastic ducks are available for adoption, but the actual number waddling in will depend on ticket sales. Participants in the duck race purchase ducks that have numbers printed on the bottom that match their ticket. Ducks cost $5 for two or a flock of 12 for $25. Business owners are encouraged to purchase a VIP flock of 50 for $100 and give them away to customers or clients.

The lucky duck that comes in first will win $500. Second prize is $250 and third prize $100. The person whose duck comes in last will be compensated for their embarrassment of adopting the “laziest” duck with $50.

Any duck that gets caught behind some rock or logjam will be rescued by our flock of human “duck herders” posted along the river.

You will want to come out early. This year we have added tons of fun with a live remote from AM-1360 WLBK’s very own Terry Ryan. There will be a jump house, guitarist Katie Sosnowski, food booths, the Genoa-Kingston Fire Department, the G-K K9 Unit, face painting, bags and music by the Genoa-Kingston High School Band.

Our own Cogsley the Duck mascot will be on hand to meet his young fans. We also will have several craft and vendor booths. This year we also added sponsorship opportunities. Thank you to our Golden Duck Sponsor: KishHealth System; Waddler Sponsor: Alan Browne Cheverolet; Paddler Sponsors: The Corner Cobbler, Corner Grill on Main, American Family Insurance – Jamie Ullmark, James Mechanical Inc. HVAC and Banner Up Signs; and Quacker Sponsors: Tobinson’s Ace Hardware, Embroidery Sew Into It, Balance Chiropractic, Genoa Smiles and Coldwell Banker Honig-Bell.

Everyone is welcome to attend the launch and cheer your duck to victory. You won’t want to miss this family fun event.

Tickets for the Great Genoa Duck Race can be purchased through the Genoa Area Chamber of Commerce office by calling 815-784-2212 or emailing genoachamber@gmail.com or visit any of our participating chamber businesses. (Look for our new giant duck sign throughout the community.) Sponsorship and vendor booths are still available. Vendor booths cost only $20. Call today, it’s sure to be a quacking good time!
