To the Editor:
Every Memorial Day we see the obligatory article in the paper reminding us to honor our veterans and remember their sacrifice while we enjoy our day off of work.
I propose we extend the same practice to Labor Day. Let us honor the average American worker by standing with them in the fight for a living wage.
Wal-Mart and McDonald’s are some of the largest employers of low-wage workers in America, paying their typical employee anywhere from $8.25 to $8.80 an hour. The majority of these workers are adults trying to support a family.
These companies are doing quite well and could afford to pay them $15-an-hour wages without instituting layoffs or price hikes. We should boycott these companies until they agree to do the decent and honorable thing and fairly compensate their workers. So when preparing for your barbeque this weekend, keep in mind the true meaning of the holiday and shop responsibly.
