Block party on tap in downtown Sycamore

SYCAMORE – Families can have one more chance spend an entertaining time with their children in downtown Sycamore today before the school season starts.

Discover Sycamore will host the 13th annual Block Party from 3 to 11 p.m. in downtown Sycamore. Families who come can expect games, contests, prizes, dog parades and a concert by a local band. Local food vendors and a beer garden will also be available.

Katelyn Fogle, event and marketing assistant with Discover Sycamore, said the Block Party used to be in September, but was moved to August this year. She expects good weather and a good turnout.

"The thought was for this to be a kind of last event of the summer for families to get together," Fogle said.

A local band called The Party Doctors will hold a concert from 8 to 11 p.m. The band is led by Sycamore High School graduate David Burdick. Fogle said the band plays everything from modern pop to classic rock.

"They kind of do it all," Fogle said.

Children can expect an appearance from Victor E. Huskie, the official mascot of Northern Illinois University. Fogle said NIU Athletics will have inflatable bounce houses for the children to enjoy.

Sycamore-based Huckleberry's Pet Parlor is presenting the Bark on the Block at 4 p.m. Participants can bring their dogs to the Sycamore Center parking lot with their dogs dressed in beach attire for a dog parade.

Returning this year is DJ Bill O'Connell from Energized Entertainment. He will play fun, upbeat party music from 5 to 8 p.m. Fogle said O'Connell usually holds dance contests and heard he was great at getting children involved.

"We hired him to make sure it's a very fun environment," Fogle said.
