SPRINGFIELD – Mary Kay Mace says she thinks she brings a personal story and personal story to gun violence.

Mace's daughter — 19-year-old Ryanne Mace — was one of five students who died when a gunman opened fire in Northern Illinois University lecture hall in February 2008. On Wednesday, Mary Kay Mace joined a rally against gun violence at the Old State Capitol in Springfield. She says she hopes when people see her they realize that gun violence can affect them and their children.

Mace says she never expected to be in the spotlight on this issue but calls a lack of congressional action "shameful."

The rally was part of an effort by Organizing for Action, a nonprofit group that stemmed from President Barack Obama's re-election campaign.
