Dance school offers aerial classes

Published: Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013 5:30 a.m. CST

The Performing Arts Academy is now offering Introduction to Aerial Silk classes at its Sycamore location. Aerial dance, in which an apparatus is rigged to the ceiling, allowing performers to move both horizontally and vertically, was first recognized in the 1970s.

Aerial silk classes are becoming a popular form of exercise. Classes incorporate a warm up, strength conditioning and stretching. Students will learn at their own pace, as there are a limited number allowed per class. Climbing, posing and dropping will be part of the curriculum. Aerial classes are for ages 9 and older.

Jodi Riley is a certified Stott Pilates instructor and an accomplished dance teacher. She has had several years of training in both dance and Pilates. Her new adventure this year has been aerial dance. She has trained at Aerial Dance Chicago as well as Destin Pilates Center in Destin, Fla. She is trained in level 1 aerial silks and will continue her training to complete level 2.

The school is offering private and semi-private lessons to adults at a discounted rate this fall and group classes to younger students. Group classes up to six are $230 for 12 weeks and private and semi-private sessions are $225 for 10 50-minute sessions. For more information on aerial classes, call 815-901-7653.
