CARBONDALE – Illinois State Police said six children were hospitalized after an all-terrain vehicle overturned in southern Illinois’ Jackson County.

Authorities said a 13-year-old girl was giving rides Tuesday on the ATV when the vehicle flipped onto its passenger side as she tried to turn onto a private road. Five female passengers were ejected. They ranged in age from 6 to 16.

Police said the youngest victim was pinned under the ATV’s roll bar and sustained severe injuries. Her medical status was not immediately clear Thursday.

There’s no word on any charges.
