Soprano, piano duo back at NIU

Cecelia and Harold Kafer will return to the Northern Illinois University School of Music at 5 p.m. Aug. 18 for a program of opera arias and transcriptions in the Recital Hall.

The program will include pieces by Strauss, Mozart, Wagner, Massenet, Bizet, Puccini and others.

Cecelia Kafer has appeared in recital, opera and oratorio throughout the United States as well as in Germany, Australia and New Zealand. She has performed with the Arizona Opera Company, the Alabama Shakespeare Festival and as a guest artist with the Florida State University Opera. She also has appeared with the Elgin and Columbus symphony orchestras. For years she was the vocalist with The Lyric Ensemble and has sung with several local performance groups.

After serving as a vocal teacher on the faculties of North Central Texas College, College of DuPage and Sherwood Conservatory for years and maintaining a private voice studio for 19 years, she retired from teaching in 2010.

Harold Kafer retired from NIU in 2010 after a long career on the music faculty and as director of the school of music, dean of the college of visual and performing arts and deputy provost.

Harold Kafer began studying piano at age 14. He has performed nationally and internationally as a pianist and conductor in solo and chamber music settings as well as in duo recitals.

He is a published author and composer and has been a consultant to the National Association of Schools of Music, the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and on the board of the International Council of Fine Arts Deans.
