DeKalb student receives memorial scholarship

Andrew Stratton is the 2013 winner of the Christopher Anderson Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded each year by Christopher’s family to a senior DeKalb High School soccer player who is a good student and exemplifies the spirit, teamwork, sportsmanship and enthusiasm for soccer that Christopher demonstrated.

Stratton played soccer all four years at DHS, was a team captain and Conference MVP.

Brent McIntosh, the DHS head soccer coach called him an “outstanding ambassador for the boys’ soccer program.”

“Andrew epitomizes all that we stand for in our program and all of our current and future players should aspire to reach his levels of commitment and pride,” McIntosh said in a news release. “Andrew had an extremely successful senior campaign which culminated with him being named the conference’s MVP. We congratulate him on winning the Christopher Anderson Memorial Scholarship and wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”

Stratton plans to attend North Central College and major in physical therapy or biology.

The scholarship was created in 2000 by the Anderson family in memory of their son and brother who was killed in a car accident on July 18, 1999, at the age of 16. The scholarship fund has grown each year through contributions made by his family and people in the DeKalb community and is managed by the DeKalb County Community Foundation.
