DuPage County reports record heroin deaths

Published: Friday, July 19, 2013 5:34 p.m. CDT

WHEATON – DuPage County officials say heroin overdose deaths are occurring at a record pace this year.

Coroner Richard Jorgensen said the county is averaging nearly one heroin overdose death a day this month.

Jorgensen told the Daily Herald of Arlington Heights that there have been 18 confirmed heroin overdose deaths in DuPage County so far this year. He said 15 more deaths suspected to be heroin-related are awaiting toxicology reports.

Jorgensen said the county is likely to surpass the 38 heroin-related deaths in 2012. There were 27 in 2011.

Roosevelt University's Illinois Consortium on Drug Policy director Kathie Kane-Willis said there is no comprehensive approach in getting the word out on the hazards facing heroin users. She noted that the state of Illinois is doing little about the problem.
