Rockford hotel fire displaces 60, injures 3 people

ROCKFORD – A fire forced 60 people to leave a Rockford hotel Wednesday with many rescued by ladder from second-floor windows.

Fire District chief Jim Rife told the Rockford Register Star the fire caused smoke damage throughout the Howard Johnson Hotel. He said the fire still is under investigation.

Three people were hospitalized for smoke inhalation and a cat died.

The fire caused about $300,000 in damage. The fire chief said four engines and 30 firefighters were able to put out the fire within 30 minutes.
