Sara Ortega, of the 300 block of South Somonauk Road, was arraigned on charges of aggravated battery and unlawful possession of a firearm on Wednesday.

SYCAMORE – A 40-year-old Cortland woman accused of slicing her husband's hand and threatening to kill him formally denied the criminal charges against her Wednesday.

Sara Ortega, of the 300 block of South Somonauk Road, was arraigned on charges of aggravated battery and unlawful possession of a firearm on Wednesday.

On May 24, Ortega’s husband told police she grabbed a knife from the kitchen, raised it above her head and said “I’m going to kill you,” several times, court records show. As she walked toward him, he lifted his right hand to block the knife. His hand was cut twice before he took the knife and ran outside, police said.

Her firearm owners identification card had been revoked, but police said they found a .45-caliber Glock handgun in her bedroom that belonged to her.

Ortega is next due in court Aug. 14.
