Sycamore OKs permit for new rectory at Church of St. Mary

SYCAMORE – A new rectory will be one of the many recent construction projects at the Church of St. Mary.

On Monday, the Sycamore City Council unanimously approved a special-use permit for the Church of St. Mary to construct a rectory. A rectory is typically a living space for pastors or rectors. The building would comply with city building requirements that include setbacks and off-street parking.

The ranch-style rectory has been planned for the lot at the northwest corner of Waterman and California streets in Sycamore. The size of the rectory will be between 2,500 to 3,500 square feet, but no design plans have been set, said Sycamore City Manager Brian Gregory.

“The finishing touches haven’t been put on the final plans,” Gregory said.

A perspective rendering of the rectory was made available.

The Church of St. Mary is currently engaged in a three-phase expansion project for its school and church. The project began May 31 with the opening ceremony for the construction of the $2.2 million Faith Formation Center. The next two phases will include the construction of a gym, cafeteria and infrastructure connecting the church with the school.

The rectory may not be built until the church has completed other construction projects.

“I believe they’re goal is not to begin that until they’re far along with their education wing,” Sycamore Mayor Ken Mundy said.

Two meetings from the Sycamore Planning Commission were held to ensure the public input on the rectory plans, Gregory said. The second meeting was held before the City Council met Monday, where the special use permit for the rectory was favorably recommended to the City Council, he said.
