ROCKFORD – Rockford College is now officially renamed Rockford University.

The change took effect Monday. WNIJ radio reported that administrators think the name change will better reflect the school’s mission.

Trustees unanimously approved the name change earlier this year for the 165-year-old institution.

Rockford College began in 1847 as Rockford Female Seminary. It later became Rockford College, and the college became coeducational in 1958.
