WHEATON – A man has been charged in a brazen robbery attempt at a mall jewelry store in suburban Chicago in which the suspect was shot.

Twenty-four-year-old Levert Jones of Detroit faces one count of attempted armed robbery.

DuPage County prosecutors said Jones pulled a sledgehammer from his waistband and smashed a display case containing watches and jewelry at the store in the Oakbrook Center on June 23.

The state’s attorney’s office said an armed security guard working at the store shot Jones in the abdomen during a scuffle. The wounded suspect was taken to a hospital.

Two accomplices escaped and remain at large.

A judge set Jones’ bond at $500,000 Saturday.

Jones told the judge he did not want a public defender and was working on hiring an attorney.
