Why listen to a registered dietitian?

Many people claim to be nutrition “experts.”  Why should you consider my nutrition advice, or that of any other registered dietitian, over these self-proclaimed nutritionists?

Here are the reasons why:

- Registered Dietitians (RDs) are required to have a Bachelor’s Degree with from a program withapproved coursework by the  Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics.

- RDs are required to complete a 1200-hour practical internship in various medical and community settings before taking their registration exam.

- RDs must pass an extensive registration exam that covers clinical and community nutrition, food service management, and education/counseling criteria.

- RDs are required to complete 75 hours of continuing nutrition education per 5-year period to maintain their registration.

So basically, if you need a true nutrition expert, an RD is the one to turn to for questions.  To find practicing RDs near you: Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (formerly the American Dietetic Association)and click on “Find A Dietitian.”
