Oak Crest crowns its new king and queen

Published: Saturday, June 29, 2013 5:30 a.m. CDT

Each year residents of Oak Crest DeKalb Area Retirement Center go to the ballot box to cast their vote for king and queen. This year, Merle Sawyer and Gene Grosch were elected. Their year-long reign will include appearances at community events and programs.

Sawyer moved to Oak Crest in August 2004 and Grosch in March 2008.

The coronation took place at the “Juke Box Memories” spring dance as other residents, family and friends looked on. The 2012-2013 king and queen, Dick and Lou Cole, passed along their crowns with their warmest wishes for the coming year.

The Sycamore High School Key Club and Interact Club participated in planning the dance, as they have done for many dances throughout the years. The young people came dressed for the occasion and ready to make the evening special for the residents. Residents especially enjoyed receiving the attention of the young people when they were asked to dance, offered treats from the Candy Bar or visited.
