Free patriotic concert offered this weekend
The Patriotic Cantata of the First United Methodist Church of DeKalb’s Celebration Chorale will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday at Boutell Memorial Concert Hall in the Northern Illinois University Music Building. No tickets will be needed for this free concert, but a free-will offering will be accepted.
The program, titled “Freedom,” will be an expression of freedom and patriotism, including a salute to the military and patriotic favorites such as “The Battle Hymn of the Republic,” Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor,” “We Shall Overcome” and “Letters from Home.”
More than 50 musicians from many different churches and organizations are scheduled to perform. Jazz in Progress will provide the instrumental music for the performance. There will be a special number by the children’s choir and bell choir; a reading of the words of Martin Luther King; a special salute to all branches of the armed services and more. “Freedom” is being directed by Christine Monteiro.
Due to parking lot construction around the Music Building, chorale publicity chairwoman Julie Turner advises attendees to park south of the building, in the lot off College Avenue, or north of the building, in the lot on Normal Road.
