The scholarships have been given each year since 2000 in memory of Bobby D. Stearnes, a 1986 graduate of DeKalb High School who died in 1998 of a sudden asthma attack at age 30. Students receiving these awards must meet the criteria of leadership, scholarship, citizenship and sportsmanship, which are qualities exemplified by Bobby Stearnes throughout his life.
The Robert D. Stearnes Memorial Foundation is a nonprofit charitable organization that was founded to continue the legacy left by Stearnes of giving and making a positive difference in the lives of others.
