Letter: Thanks for saving Kiwanis Park

Published: Friday, June 21, 2013 5:30 a.m. CST

To the Editor:

On behalf of the Board of Directors of AYSO Region 193, I wish to express our sincere gratitude to the District 428 school board, DeKalb park board and their respective staffs for saving Kiwanis Park.

We salute the vision and flexibility of both boards for the agreement they reached. We especially wish to acknowledge the citizens, who recognized the potential loss and worked tirelessly to preserve this irreplaceable community asset.

Thanks go to Bessie Chronopoulos for leading the way, and to Art and Laurie Erdmann, Phyllis Franzene, Bill Lynch, Jan Jacobson, Christine Gardner, Bill Colvin, Bill Barron, and all the citizens who signed petitions and put up yard signs.

Green space like Kiwanis Park is all too rare, but even more importantly to us, the children of our community will be playing soccer out there for generations to come. We can all be proud that DeKalb came together to assure the right result.
