Myisha Hill leads a group of women in a free Zumba class at the New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in DeKalb on Thursday, June 13, 2013.

DeKALB – Myisha Hill wants to help people to get fit in a fun way, which is why she's offering free Zumba classes at her church this summer.

The 31-year-old mother of three admits that the lobby of the New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in DeKalb is an unusual place to hold a Zumba class. The classes will be held early Thursday evenings and Friday afternoons.

"I felt it was time we offered something in the community that inspired people to get fit," Hill said. "Not everyone can always afford to pay the (Kishwaukee Family YMCA) or pay a gym to go take a Zumba class, so why not get DeKalb County moving and do it at the church?"

Rev. George "Joe" Mitchell said the church tries to a take holistic approach in its ministry. In addition to taking care of the soul, a person should also care for his or her mind and body, he said, and that how's the prospect of Zumba at the church was raised.

"She's certified in Zumba, and we couldn't think of a better place to offer free Zumba classes than at the church," Mitchell said.

Hill said she was certified to teach Zumba, a dance fitness program, in 2011 at Formula Fitness Club in Chicago.

"Why not Zumba?" Hill added. "It's a total fitness dance party."

While he prefers to exercise through weightlifting and playing basketball, Mitchell said he might try to Zumba within the next couple of weeks.

Hill said the classes will run on Thursdays and Fridays until Aug. 9, when she begins preparing for her fall classwork at Northern Illinois University. Her major is general studies, but she hopes to go to graduate school for occupational therapy.

Whether or not the classes will continue into the school year will depend on her workload, Hill said.
