Metra steps up security on suburban Chicago lines

CHICAGO – Officials with the Metra commuter train service say they're stepping up police patrols for the system that runs along 11 different routes in northern Illinois.

CEO Alex Clifford says in a statement Wednesday that the new safety initiative is starting immediately. It will include an increased police presence in parking lots, on platforms and aboard trains.

Metra's police force has about 100 officers.

The agency says the police also will be talking with conductors during peak and off-peak hours.
