Safety-net hospital lays off 68 employees

CHICAGO – A Chicago hospital that treats a large number of uninsured patients has laid off nearly 70 employees, including emergency room nurses.

Roseland Community Hospital on the city’s South Side is a so-called safety-net hospital serving a primarily poor area where many people don’t have any health insurance coverage.

It owes millions of dollars in outstanding bills and must pay or reduce services.

It was reported that the 68 staff cuts include lab and radiology clerks, secretaries, emergency room nurses and managers.
