Sycamore's Hooker wins 200 state title

Sycamore sophomore wins 200 Class 2A state title

Sycamore sophomore Dion Hooker won the Class 2A state championship in the 200 on Saturday.

Hooker had a bit of a slow start and was in third after the first 100 meters, but turned it on down the homestretch and broke the finish line in first to win his first state championship.

He becomes the first Sycamore boys track athlete to win a state title since 1978.

Earlier, Hooker was sixth in the 100.

Earlier in the day, the Kaneland 4x800 relay team of Conor Johnson, Nate Kucera, Luis Acosta and Kyle Carter won the Class 2A state championship.

Kaneland overcame some trouble on the first handoff between Johnson and Carter, but Carter ran a strong second leg to put Kaneland into the lead.

Acosta kept the lead on the third leg and Kucera just held on down the last 150 meters for the win.

It is the first relay state championship for Kaneland since 2010, when the Knights' 4x400 relay team won state.
