Diehl: Summer events make a splash in Sycamore

As the temperatures begin to rise and flip flops come back in style, in Sycamore that only means one thing; the summer events season is just around the corner. So mark your calendars, because there’s plenty of fun that you won’t want to miss.

Every Sunday, all summer long, Discover Sycamore offers a Farmers’ Market with fresh produce, baked goods, fresh-cut flowers, local wines and more. Enjoy live music from a variety of entertainers at noon and learn a thing or two from our monthly guest chefs. The market will feature 13 vendors and will run 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. from Sunday through Sept. 29 on the corner of Somonauk and Elm streets in downtown Sycamore.

Think pink in downtown Sycamore from 4 to 8 p.m. June 6 for Ladies Night Out. Wear pink and enjoy an evening of shopping, sweet treats and fun with your gal pals in support of breast cancer awareness and research.

New to this year’s summer lineup is Tuesdays on the Town, featuring family-friendly activities in downtown Sycamore on the second Tuesday of each month through September.

From 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. June 11, Sycamore will paint the town red and black in support of NIU Night. Wear your Huskies gear and come meet and greet NIU athletes, participate in minisport activities and get your picture taken with Victor E. Huskie. Live music will be provided by the NIU School of Music.

There’s a certain charm in seeing a movie outside on a beautiful summer night. Invite the whole family to experience Summer on State, free outdoor movie nights in downtown Sycamore at dusk, on the corner of Elm and Somonauk streets. This summer’s lineup will include “The Lorax,” presented by KishHealth System, on June 11, “Surf’s Up,” presented by NB&T, on July 9 and “Wreck It Ralph,” presented by Castle Bank, on July 26. Don’t forget to pack lawn chairs and blankets.

Uncover unique finds, timeless antiques and great bargains at Treasures from the Attic, June 13, 14 and 15. Our citywide estate, yard and sidewalk sale is a yearly event that any thrifty shopper would not want to miss. Spend the weekend perusing neighborhood garage sales or host a sale of your own to rid your home of accumulated clutter. To register, visit or call the Sycamore Chamber at 815-895-3456.

During the last weekend in July, visitors flock to Sycamore’s Turning Back Time Weekend. The event includes Cruise Night, presented by Auto Meter Products, on July 27, which will feature a Classic Car Cruise Parade, beer garden, DJ, food vendors and more. Bringing back the sounds of the ’50s and ’60s, Rick Lindy and the Wild Ones will take the stage from 7 to 10 p.m. On July 28, the annual Fizz Ehrler Car Show will showcase more than 1,000 classic cars.

To conclude the summer and celebrate a new school year, all are invited to the annual Block Party celebration from 3 to 11 p.m. Aug. 24. Back for its fourth year is Bark on the Block, Sycamore’s Top Dog Competition, presented by Huckleberry’s Pet Parlor. There also will be a variety of activities including kids’ games, inflatable attractions, DJ, contests, prizes, food from local vendors, beer garden, and a free live concert from The Party Doctors.
