Illinois tea party to protest at IRS offices

CHICAGO – Members of Illinois' tea party movement say they'll protest outside IRS offices in four cities over revelations that the agency targeted conservative groups for extra scrutiny.

The protests will take place at noon Tuesday in Chicago, Downers Grove, Rockford and Springfield. Similar protests are planned throughout the country.

Denise Cattoni is founder of the Illinois tea party. She says the IRS demonstrated "the most disturbing, illegal and outrageous abuse of government power." She says Congress should determine if legal charges are warranted in the matter.

The former chief of the Internal Revenue Service told the Senate Finance Committee Tuesday that he doesn't know why his agency targeted tea party and other conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status. Douglas Shulman served from March 2008 until November 2012, when the targeting was underway.
