Smokers adapting to ban at Illinois State University

NORMAL – School officials and some students say a ban on smoking in high traffic areas at Illinois State University is going smoothly so far.

The Bloomington Pantagraph reported the smoking ban affects the campus quad and other areas. It was started by a student initiative.

ISU spokesman Eric Jome said the proposal was approved first by the Student Government Association then the Academic Senate. He says the ban is enforced by cooperation and courtesy.

ISU sophomore Mary Dougherty of Tinley Park said the quad is a lot cleaner since the ban.

A similar ban may be ahead for other Illinois schools. Earlier this month, the Illinois Senate passed a ban on smoking at all state-supported colleges and universities. The measure is pending in the House.
