Genoa chamber moving forward with a purpose

Published: Tuesday, May 21, 2013 5:30 a.m. CDT

The Genoa Area Chamber of Commerce recently moved to a new location at 111 N. Sycamore St., Genoa.

This new location will allow us to better serve our chamber members, community and visitors. We are excited about our new welcome center to include information about our chamber member businesses, economic development, maps for summer travel, as well as community and area guides to help you find products, services and information about the area. Our regular office hours are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

We invite you to stop in to learn more about the chamber. Feel free to visit our new website at genoacc.com or send us an email at genoachamber@gmail.com

It also is a very special time for the Genoa Area Chamber as we plan for our 54th annual Genoa Days King and Queen Scholarship Contest.

It all begins with the Genoa-Kingston High School seniors choosing 10 young men and 10 young women from their classmates as semifinalists. Our King and Queen Committee then judge the questionnaires returned by the semifinalists and announce five young men and five young women as finalists.

This year’s queen finalists are: Melissa Baus, Samantha Fisher, Vanessa Garza, Meredith Fitzsimmons and Victoria Hensley. This year’s king finalists are: Quinn Anderson, Zane LaCasse, Mason Lucca, Ben Rabe and Cal Thompson.

On June 12, the final contestants will be on the grandstand stage at Genoa Days for the final judging to take place and for one young man and one young woman to be crowned Genoa Days King and Queen. Each winner will receive $1,000 toward continuing their education.

This year, for the first time, the royal court members will each receive $100 in cash. This was made possible in part by KishHealth System and Genoa Liquors. The entire court will receive royal gift bags filled with gifts, prizes and promotional products from area businesses. We are so proud to have the support of chamber member businesses to continue to make this event a huge success.

We are so thankful to our Ambassadors King and Queen committee, which includes Heather Criddle of Resource Bank, Jamie Ullmark of American Family Insurance, Nicole Moore of Resource Bank, Lisa Motts of NB&T, Linda Underwood of Century 21 New Heritage, Kathy Jurs-Nelson of Tobinson Ace Hardware and myself.

We welcome sponsorships to help to continue to grow this scholarship event; deadline is June 10. Call the chamber at 815-784-2212 or email genoachamber@gmail.com.

Look for details about the upcoming Genoa Chamber Golf Classic, which is open to the public. It is scheduled for July 19 at The Oak Club of Genoa. We are excited to bring the outing back to Genoa this year. It will have an Olympic theme, “Welcome Home – Let the Games Begin.”

Great things are happening in Genoa. Have a great summer and come golf with us.

• Kristie Mulso is executive director of the Genoa Area Chamber of Commerce.
