Published: Tuesday, May 14, 2013 5:30 a.m. CDT

DeKalb baseball is hoping to get in a groove during the last week of the regular season as the Barbs defeated Sterling, 10-3, in a Northern Illinois Big 12 crossover game.

Jake Kuykendall went 2 for 4 with two home runs and five RBIs.

He had a three-run blast in the first inning and a two-run home run in the third, both out to left-center field.

Danny Petras finished 2 for 4 and was on base for both of Kuykendall’s home runs. Josh Snead also hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning.

Vaughn Jones pitched a complete game, giving up three earned runs and striking out eight to earn his second win of the season.

“He was able to throw two pitches for strikes tonight and kept the hitters off balance,” DeKalb coach Jake Howells said. “He was able to minimize damage when runners were on.”

The Barbs (11-15) host Yorkville today. A DeKalb win over the Foxes would give Sycamore a share of the NI Big 12 East title with Yorkville and Morris.

Knights fall: Kaneland was shut out by Marengo, 2-0, in a nonconference matchup. Matt Limbrunner pitched 5 2/3 innings and gave up five hits while striking out four for the Knights (11-15). He was also 1 for 2 at the plate.

Cogs lose: Genoa-Kingston lost to Rock Falls, 7-1, in a nonconference game.
